Herbalists Marc and Mindy give a heartfelt thank you to their herbalism enthusiast audience on this Valentine’s Day episode, with much appreciation to the growth of the Walking Herbalist Podcast and Website. Not coincidentally, the Herb of the Podcast is Cinnamon! Marc discusses the differences between the species Cinnamomum verum (or true cinnamon) and Cinnamomum cassia, and how you can tell them apart. He tells the story of the fabled cinnamon bird, the Cinnamologus. Marc also talks about research studies that looked at the amount of coumarin in each of these species, as well as the effects of cinnamon on blood sugar levels. The Backed By Science study, presented by Mindy, is “Liposome containing cinnamon oil with antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus biofilm” [Cui H. Biofouling 2016:32(1):215-255], which proposes that cinnamon essential oil encapsulated by liposomes may be a good antibiotic agent for MRSA. Dr. Michael Balick’s book, “Rodale’s 21st Century Herbal – A Practical Guide for Healthy Living Using Nature’s Most Powerful Plants” is reviewed. The Herbal News story revolves around the concept of the “Agrihood”, with a discussion on the pros and cons of a manufactured agricultural community. Finally, the duo recount what they learned at the Massachusetts Trustees of Reservations Master Urban Gardener Class in Boston. A special email from one of their listeners caps off the show. As always, this podcast attempts to provide a voice in the herbalism, homesteading, and self-reliance community. We hope you enjoy it!
